Problem with ants and what kind are they?

Ants have overtaken my garden. I have a tree in my garden whose bark is being shredded by ants. These are not the little nuisance sugar ants. I have gotten rid of those in the past by using a borax based sugar solution. any idea what kind of ants I have and whether a borax solution will help
