What are the alternatives to borax at taxidermy?

places like vandykestaxidermy.com sells substitiutes for borax. but every taxidermist i know uses borax. its a great preservative and it also serves as a bug repellent. nothing more heart breaking than spending all that time on a beautiful mount just to have it ate up by mites or some other lttle critter.
