How warm does a dog's bed need to be in summertime?

To be quite frank, the dog only needs a place to sleep out of the sun and the wind in Summer. These are dogs we are speaking of, not a carton of eggs. My own dog prefers to sleep on the grass and would do so at night if I let him. We keep him indoors at night and in inclimate weather.
