Question about hard water & dishwasher's?

Hard water build up on dishes. what can I do? I know the obvious Solution it to get a water softener, But I was wondering if anyone had any quick solutions, I've heard to use vinegar, jet dry even some one said to try "mule team borax" whatever that is, any home remedies out there?
